About The Power 10

The Power 10 is an ongoing tournament in which (JAWA) Members may challenge one another to climb the ladder. Only very skilled fighters may achieve the number 1 spot. This page shows the current standings of the Power 10. Although the Power 10 is a skill-based tournament, its main goal is to encourage friendly competition. Participants are expected to show respect for one another, and demonstrate good sportsmanship. Participation in the tournament is voluntary, and members can enter or leave the competition at any time. The current Power 10 managers are Dace & Helena Revan. All questions about the tournament and its rules may be forwarded to them via forum or discord direct message. A complete list of rules can be found at the bottom of this page.

The Rankings

Participation

Who may participate

The tournament is limited to active members of the (JAWA) Clan. Retired Members, trialists and former members are not permitted to compete. Participants may be removed from the tournament if they are unable to compete for an extended period.

How to enter

There are two ways to enter the Power 10. The traditional method is by challenging and defeating one of the two lowest-ranked players in the bracket in a best-of-five duel match. If all ten spots are occupied, players may challenge participants ranked at place 9 and 10. If there are vacancies at the bottom of the list, players may ignore those spaces and challenge any of the two lowest-ranked participants. The Power 10 managers may also fill vacancies by adding players who wish to join at the bottom of the rankings. If there are vacancies at the bottom of the list, a player who challenges one of the two lowest-ranked participants and loses may be added to fill a vacancy.

Match Rules

Challenges

Each week, participants are entitled to challenge no more than two higher-ranked players to Power 10 matches. Participants are permitted to accept no more than two challenges from lower-ranked players. Participants may only challenge those players in the next two ranks above them in the standings. For purposes of this rule, new weeks begin each Sunday.

Issuing and accepting challenges

Players may extend challenges to higher-ranked players on the server, or may be scheduled in advance by agreement of the players. If a player is unable to accept a challenge for good cause, such as lack of time, exhaustion, or lag, the match may be postponed. Participants are expected to afford their fellow competitors this courtesy when requesting a match. However, participants are not entitled to avoid matches without cause. If you believe that another player is refusing matches without good reason, please contact a Power 10 manager.

Match rules

Power 10 matches consist of between three and five duels between the participants. The duels do not have to be held consecutively, and matches may be paused and resumed later, or restarted by agreement of the participants. Normal dueling rules apply, and players may use the sabers of their choice in each duel. The winner of the match is the first player to win three duels. If this happens in less than five duels, the losing player may choose to end the match, or continue until they have had five duels.

Rematches

Normally, two participants should not face each other more than once in any given week. A defeated competitor may not challenge the player who defeated him or her until the following week. However, if the players agree that the match was unfair or should be replayed, they may disregard the results of the earlier match and fight again. Rematches of this kind do not count against each competitor's challenge limits for the week.

Ties in the rankings

The Spring 2024 Split began with a round-robin tournament to sort out the rankings, and due to time concerns, it was decided in advance to end the tournament after nine rounds, the number that would have occurred if there were only ten participants. However, twelve players entered, and at the end of nine rounds there were two ties in the standings: a three-way tie for fourth place, and another tie for seventh place. These would have been resolved had the tournament continued on for two more rounds, but as the end had already been announced, and the ties were expected to be temporary and brief, they were allowed to stand.

Subsequently, the Power 10 captains had to decide whether the ties could be broken by wins, losses, or both. It was decided that a player who defeated someone in a tie would advance to the next rank, rather than replacing the defeated player in a tie with others. Consequently losing a challenge would not break the tie: the tie would only be broken if one of the tied players defeated a higher-ranked player. This solution may be revised if it creates further difficulties, or in future splits.

Irregularities

An unfinished Power 10 match that is never resumed or restarted may be recorded as a tie if the scores are even, or a draw if the scores are uneven, but neither player has won three duels. Matches that do not comply with the challenge rules due to one of the competitors having issued or accepted more than two matches during a particular week, or because the challenged player was more than two ranks above the challenger, will be disregarded.

If the two competitors disagree as to the fairness or results of a match, they should refer the matter to the current Power 10 managers, who will attempt to resolve the issue in the manner that seems best.

Reporting and Activity

Reporting match results

Following a match, either competitor may report the results on the forum in the Submit Results Thread. All reports should include the score and the date of the match. Players should attempt to report match results within two days of a match. Alternatively, if a Council Member is present during the match, he or she may make the report for the competitors.

Competitor activity

Power 10 participants are expected to be available for challenges on a regular basis. Players who have neither issued nor accepted challenges for two weeks may be removed from the tournament if necessary, this will be based on the managers judgement. The managers may give lower-ranked players permission to skip over competitors who are temporarily inactive, in lieu of removing the inactive players. Participants who deliberately avoid matches without good cause may be warned, reduced by one level in the rankings, or if necessary removed from the tournament.
